There are several creation myths surrounding this variety; the most prominent being that the original trees were draped with red robes, as a sign of reverence, after the tea was used to heal a poisoned prince. The Da Hong Pao that is available for consumers is blended from other Wuyi cliff teas to be similar in taste and mouthfeel as the original plants. Qi Dan and Bei Dou, which are direct descendants of the famous Da Hong Pao mother bushes, are primarily blended to achieve the mineral complexity, and distinct flavor profile, that Da Hong Pao is famous for. The aging process transforms the flavors, deepening and broadening, while mellowing higher notes.

These bricks were made by the tea master Zhang Tianfu, who passed away in 2017, at 108 years old. Master Zhang Tianfu revolutionized the tea industry in China, Taiwan, Japan, and the rest of the world. He introduced many innovations to the production and quality of oolong that changed the way the tea was produced. Many consider Master Zhang Tianfu as the most influential force in the tea industry, and he is often referred to as the "Pillar of Tea Research". These are the last of the bricks, and there will be no more made. We are honored to carry a piece of Master Tianfu's legacy.
